Buddies (Sep 11)

On Friday we met our 3rd Grade Buddies! Our class had a BLAST!!! After our buddies left I had a sad bunch of Kindergartners. But, we will see them again soon!
There are so many benefits to having an older buddy class. Younger children, like our Kindergartners, especially enjoy the one-to-one attention they receive from their older buddy. They make comments such as, "He makes me feel special; he says nice things to me!" and"We do lots of fun things together. She`s my friend." Participation with an older buddy class enhances children`s cooperative learning behaviors such as taking turns, listening, sharing knowledge, praising another`s effort, helping one another, and completing a task. With the extra attention and assistance, the younger children work harder and want to make their older buddy proud. As the older students assume the role of the teacher, they are motivated to do their best. They also experience pride in their ability to be helpful. The younger children bond with the older buddy and friendships flourish as the year progresses.

We met with our buddies for about 45 minutes. Our buddies came into our classroom and first performed a Reader's Theater for us! Then our students mingled and met their buddy. After getting situated buddies played a dice game called "Horse Race." Each buddy got a tray of dice:

Box Cars and One-Eyed Jacks

The clear tray is called the "race track" and that's where all the dice start. The black tray is called the "barn" and that is where your "horse" (die) goes when it wins. One buddy was white and the other blue. At the same time, each buddy rolled their die and whoever rolled the greater number got to place their die in the "barn." The first buddy to put all their "horses" in the "barn" wins!

Our Week in Kindergarten (Aug 31-Sep 11)

We've been working very hard in Kindergarten! This week we reviewed the letters Mm, Ff, Tt, and Nn.  Along with letters and sounds we've been working on beginning sounds, counting, numbers, and so much more. We've also been having fun reading stories, singing, dancing, and we can't forget learning about DINOSAURS!!!

For the past two weeks we've been learning all about dinosaurs! Here's how it all started...

One evening I was walking my dogs in the desert and came across a giant egg! ;) So of course, I brought it to the classroom! Students brainstormed and made inferences about what was in the egg based on clues that I gave them. The class enjoyed observing the egg everyday and coming to school with anticipation whether it had hatched yet :)

After taking good care of our egg something happened one night...it DID hatch!! By looking at the footprints it left behind we observed that the prints matched those of a baby T-Rex!

We also made posters about dinosaurs...everyone love the Tyrannosaurus Rex!!

Paleontologists are the reason we know so much about dinosaurs. And for a day, students called each other "Doctors" and did the work of a true paleontologist! They got to excavate a rock (hardened baking soda and water) using tools only a paleontologist would use, a pick (toothpick) and a brush (paint brush). They worked in partners to carefully uncover the fossils in the rock.

Our Paleontologists also had to cut and piece fossils together to build a dinosaur. After gluing the dinosaur together we made dinosaur bones using pretzels and marshmallows for our Fun Friday Food!
